You may have heard of mushrooms before. No, we are not talking about the fungi that you often cook together with your food to add a bit of flavor in your meals. We are talking about shrooms here; the “magic mushrooms”, as they are often called because of their psychedelic effects. There is a really good chance that you may have heard of them before because they are some of the most popular ways of getting high in a natural and organic way. They might even be just as popular as cannabis.
That said, like marijuana, magic mushrooms have different strains that all have their different attributes. These strains of shrooms tend to be special in their own unique way. So, if you want to educate yourself some more and learn a little more about the strains of shrooms, we have prepared a short guide on the most popular magic mushroom strains today.
What are shrooms?
Magic mushrooms or “shrooms”, as they are commonly called, are actually formally known as psilocybin mushrooms because of how they contain a psychedelic compound called psilocybin. It is this same psychedelic chemical compound that tends to induce a psychoactive sensation that is akin to the feeling of “getting high” that makes magic mushrooms as popular as they are.
Shrooms are actually natural and organic, unlike some other psychedelic substances you see in the market today. That is why magic mushrooms are regarded as very safe substances to use. In fact, they have always been a part of the history of the human race because different cultures have been using shrooms for thousands of years already.
Evidence points out that ancient cultures that lived about 6,000 to 9,000 years ago used magic mushrooms for religious and spiritual reasons. That is because using them is like you are getting into a state of spiritual trance that is very similar to getting “touched by the gods” in some sort of ways. In all other cases, ancient cultures were also using magic mushrooms for healing purposes because of how therapeutic its effects are especially when it comes to relieving stress.
Today, shrooms are some of the most widely used psychedelic substances in the market as they are regarded as safe because studies show that there is little to no risk of getting addicted to shrooms. Also, people tend to easily adjust to the effects of shrooms as the psychoactive high they induce tends to decrease the more you use them on a short-term basis. In other words, the risk of overdosing on shrooms tend to be very slim.
Knowing the different strains of shrooms
Whether you are foraging for them in the wild or buying them from your local dealer, it can be pretty tricky to get to know the different strains of shrooms. After all, if you are looking for them in the wild, you might end up with mushrooms that are actually poisonous. And if you are purchasing them, there is also a risk that you will be buying ordinary fungi that have no psychoactive effects at all.
That said, here are the different magic shroom strain names you need to know and the ones that are the most common in a mushroom market that has a lot of different strains:
- Psilocybe cubensis
Psilocybe cubensisis the scientific name of magic mushrooms that are the most common to find in the wild or in the market. A popular type of this is the Mazatapecmushroom strain, which was traditionally found around Mazatapec in Mexico. This is one of the best psychedelic mushroom strains and is also one of the easiest Psilocybe cubensis strain to grow. Also called the Mexican cap, there are different types of this strain that can be found all over Mexico.
What easily distinguishes Psilocybe cubensis is this strain’s large mushroom caps. This strain’s caps are usually of a reddish or brownish color and has stems that are usually white or a bit yellowish. And when you crush them, it tends to turn into a bluish kind of color.
This strain of mushroom can easily be found in places that are quite humid and moist. That is why they are common in Mexico and a lot of tropical countries with a lot of moisture. And if you look for them in the wild, they can be found in the dung of grazing livestock.
- Psilocybe semilanceata
Psilocybe semilanceata is often called liberty cap and is also one of the more common magic mushrooms you can find in the wild. Unlike the first one on this list, this strain tends to be small and have pointed caps that tend to be yellowish or brownish. You can find this species or strain of mushrooms in places with livestock but it does not commonly grow on dung unlike Psilocybe cubensis.
- Psilocybe pelliculosa
Psilocybe pelliculosais very similar to Psilocybe semilanceata. That is because they almost look identical. However, the one thing that really sets them apart is that this strain tends to have very weak psychoactive properties that do not stand up to par with its nearly identical twin. In that sense, it is the more mellow of the two lookalikes.
- Psilocybe baeocystis
The distinguishing feature of this strain of magic mushroom is its dark brown cap. It also has a yellowish stem that can be a bit brown when it has already been exposed to the open for a long time. You can most likely find this mushroom in rotting logs.
- Psilocybe liniformans
Psilocybe liniformans is another popular strain of magic mushrooms particularly because it is great for beginners. It is not very potent when it comes to its psychoactive properties and is a good experience for any person trying shrooms for the first time. This strain tends to have a unique and strong odor that can be aromatic. It can be found in areas such as Oregon, Washington, and other northern parts of the United States.
- Psilocybe bohemica
Psilocybe bohemica is a strain that has a peculiar scent in the sense that it kinda reminds you of radish. It is most likely found in decaying wood and plant residue in forested areas. It is very common in the Czech Republic and is one of the most potent strains of magic mushrooms when it comes to psilocybin content. It actually is regarded as the second-most potent strain out there.
